4 MEN WITH BEARDS
BEN, JORGE: F?r?a Bruta LP (4M 168LP) 17.00 "Originally released in 1970, F?r?a Bruta is an absolute classic from one of Brazil's most consistently great artists. Despite being embraced by the tropicalia movement (with Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa both covering his songs) there are no psychedelic meanderings to be found within these grooves -- this set is pure samba-soul. Jorge Ben is backed here by the innovative Trio Mocot? who never overplay and allow his soulful vocal delivery and samba guitar to be the centerpieces." 180 gram vinyl.
COSTA, GAL: Gal Costa LP (4M 169LP) 17.00 "Originally released in 1969, Gal Costa's second solo album is one of the finest releases to come out of Brazil's tropicalia movement. Featuring songwriting and vocal help from Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa flows effortlessly between shredding psychedelia and smooth bossa nova. An essential record for anyone that appreciates the far reaches of Brazilian popular music. Includes the classic tracks 'Baby' and 'N?o Identificado.'" 180 gram vinyl. ANTHEM
PRESTON & DANIEL MENCHE, JOE: Cerberic Doxology CD/DVD (ANTHEM 801CD) 15.00 "A single piece statement from Joe Preston and Daniel Menche, and an epic tome carved from some form of primordial stone. As an album containing a regular CD audio side in addition to a DVD audio/video side, this release breathes life musically and visually on three different planes of existence. First, as a 25 minute audio recording, which is born of a vocal chant evocation from both Joe and Daniel, of which layers expand, contract, and weave within each other in an otherworldly, mysterious dronescape, in a way that feels like a moment of mystical/mythical creation akin to Gyorgy Ligeti's introduction to the monolith, in the film 2001 (or Ash Williams' mispronunciation of the Necronomicon and it's results, if you prefer)? second (on side 2 of this CD/DVD dualdisc), as DVD audio, specifically mastered for this intent, which enables the absolute full range of the recordings high and lows to be acutely present, thus expanding an already head shrinking experience? and third, as the DVD audio with a full length video, culled from footage of the mysterious landscape of the Pacific Northwest, exhibiting its terrain, volcanic activity and atmospheric disturbances, from obscure locations throughout the region, in addition of footage of Sam Hill's Stonehenge memorial located in Southeastern Washington State. The visuals, combined with the unusually forceful subtleties of the audio makes this an experience to behold a multitude of occasions, with different effect, depending on one's mindframe." CD/5.1 DVD audio/video dualdisc (region 0, NTSC). ASTERISK
PEYTON, CAROLINE: Mock Up CD (ASTERISK 006CD) 14.00 "Issued in 1972, the ten-song album has been expanded to fourteen, including her three vocal cuts on the Screaming Gypsy Bandits In The Eye LP. Dug up in the process was a live performance at the Hummingbird Caf? in 1972 captured on film, which has been added as enhanced content on the CD. In addition to scores of unpublished photos, the booklet is jammed full of Edd Hurt's detailed liner notes that document not only the making of Mock Up, but also the Bloomington, Indiana scene of the 1970s." Includes 16-page booklet and Numero group trading card.
PEYTON, CAROLINE: Intuition CD (ASTERISK 007CD) 14.00 "Issued in 1977, the ten-song album has been expanded to seventeen, including two studio outtakes and five demos recorded for Arista. The booklet features a dozen candid photos from the period and Edd Hurt's account of Caroline's final days as an outsider folk goddess." "A middle road between Buffy Sainte-Marie's electroaugmented Illuminations and Nick Drake's Pink Moon." -Pitchfork. Includes 12-page booklet and Numero group trading card. BEYOND (UK)
KAPUCHON & BENNY RODRIGUES: Unexpected E.P. 12" (BEYOND 002EP) 13.00 "The next installment from the new Beyond imprint is with us, featuring two newcomers from the thriving U.S. underground: Kapuchon & Benny Rodriques. The pair bring a magical Detroit infused collection of warm, urgent and modern house music into our peripheral vision where it's simply hard to ignore. Like a well loved vintage drum machine tweaked to perfection, or a dusty old synth rejuvenated. 'And Again' draws inspiration from the rich synthesized landscapes of classic Detroit techno, however adding a totally fresh and modern aesthetic, through its use of precise drum fills and beautifully crafted harmonies. On a more thoughtful, soulful tip, 'Unexpected' unravels itself with smooth chord atmospheres, driving, solid-state percussion and teasing delay FX. The story might be a familiar one to those who have their ears firmly pressed to the dancefloor, but for good reason, as these two fine storytellers have crafted a golden moment for the late, late hours. The acidic ride of 'Potato Tomato,' with its pushing sub bass and glistening crescendos is perhaps the toughest cut of the EP, and delivers the energy where its needed whilst still holding onto that classic, deep-as-dawn Chicago-to-Detroit vibe." DAGORED (ITALY)

ASTRAL SOCIAL CLUB: Plug Music Ramoon LP (DWR 003LP) 23.00 "Dancing Wayang Records are proud to present the new studio-recorded, full-length album by Neil Campbell's Astral Social Club. Featuring two tracks of fearless sonic bliss and two long journeys to a state of sustained ecstasy Plug Music Ramoon was recorded in one day on analogue 2" tape. This limited edition LP comes housed in a gorgeous hand-printed silkscreen sleeve, with insert. Sequenced in chronological order on the LP as the tracks were recorded in the studio, the opener 'Flamingo Moon' takes off into outer space. It's a gentle start to the impending Astral chaos as the rambunctious 'Punk Rocker / Mug Cracker' noisily propels itself and its passengers forwards. This 14-minute showdown is divided into two parts with the loose, drum-led 'Punk Rocker' submerging into the swooping sonics of the 'Mug Cracker.' Side 2 introduces a playful element into the spiral density with percussive sticks and bells providing a tribal backdrop for resonant electronics, keyboard odysseys and some experimental vocal work from helmsman Neil Campbell. After a wild solar adventure, the album culminates in 'Ramoon Ramoon,' a considered and tight improvisation that steers the Club homeward. Whilst Club member John Clyde-Evans's laptop contributions provide much of the backbone groove of the album, Stewart Keith adds light and shade on a variety of keyboards and toys. But it's Campbell's dense guitars that thicken the very stem of these four tracks and leads his Astral Social Club to conjure up his dreams and visions. Neil Campbell is a stalwart of the UK experimental music scene who began making music in the early 1980s. Originally a member of loose improvisational collective A-Band, he established himself more firmly in the 90s as a founding member of Vibracathedral Orchestra. Campbell utilizes guitars, electronics, vocals and laptop generated and manipulated sounds in his freeform improvisations. In 2005, he embarked on his solo project Astral Social Club often drawing on the talents of kindred spirits. Stewart Keith is a long-time friend and collaborator of Neil Campbell and one of the main members of Nottingham's the A-Band playing free drone and high-energy rock music and championing an un-tutored, elemental and almost primitive approach to music making. John Clyde-Evans, aka Tirath Singh Nirmala, has played with artists such as Richard Youngs and Vibracathedral Orchestra contributing computer generated sounds, electronics and violin." Limited 500 copies, numbered. DIRT CREW (GERMANY)
DIRT CREW: Soundwave (Quarion/Filippo Moscatello Mixes) 12" (DIRT 030EP) 12.00 These new remixes of Dirt Crew's "Soundwave" are a special, deep journey into the history of house music. First up is Quarion, who delivers a dark and spacious reinterpretation of the original that recalls a lot of early '90s house tracks by the likes of Chez Damier, Moodymann and Basic Channel. The second remix is by Filippo "Naughty" Moscatello, who was a big fan of the original track and insisted on making a remix that is big and classic. ECSTATIC PEACE

Brown paper sleeve with press-on cover. EIGHTTRACK (GERMANY)
SMOBEE: Electronic Boogie 12" (8TRACK 014EP) 13.00 "Smobee comes from the Belgian DJ duo Smos & Baby Bee. For 15 years they've been residents at the legendary club Caf? D'anvers. The first Eightrack Recordings -- called ShitGoddamn -- was also made by Smos & Baby Bee under the moniker R.A.W. This time it's a nu-jack kinda vibe and one great old skool disco funk re-edit track. Along with this EP comes a NY city boy 's Nick Chacona remix." EMANEM (UK)
WESTON, VERYAN: Allusions CD (EMANEM 5001CD) 19.00 "Most of a solo piano concert performed in Bordeaux. The free improvising basically follows on from his 1993 recording Playing Alone (Acta 9). It is mostly a leap forward from the earlier album, but there are also some fond looks backwards as when fragments of tunes from the jazz age creep in. One can hear the influence of the two major pianists of the 1960s -- both the spaciousness of Paul Bley and the density of Cecil Taylor -- and also that of composers, most notably B?la Bart?k and, above all, Conlon Nancarrow, who used piano rolls to create music not playable by mere mortals. Out of all these influences, Weston has long found his own voice in a style that is administered strictly through the keyboard and pedals. His improvising ranges from somewhat isolated pecks at the keyboard to involved passages that sound impossible for one pianist to play. There are times when his left and right hands sound like fairly unrelated entities, as if there was a duet going on. Since Weston first appeared on record (with Lol Coxhill) over thirty years ago, he has continued to get better and better, making him one of the major musicians in the world of free improvisation. Over twenty years ago, the notes on his first solo record stated that: Veryan Weston is a pianist whose reputation has yet to match his talent. That is still true, even though both his reputation and talent have grown considerably. 79 minutes." 3-panel digipack with liner notes by Martin Davidson.
LEE, OKKYUNG/PETER EVANS/STEVE BERESFORD: Check For Monsters CD (EMANEM 5002CD) 19.00 "Cellist Lee organized this trio with Evans on trumpets and Beresford on piano for a mini-tour. This CD contains music from two of their four concerts -- in New York City and Philadelphia. Although they had not played together before as a trio, they manage to sound like a long-standing improvising group, with much togetherness and listening to each other -- finding numerous ways to complement each other. The music is often very dense or fast, but they do frequently come back down to earth. Anyone who either likes or dislikes any of the participants is bound to enjoy this music which showcases both the individuals and the group. 58 minutes." 3-panel digipack with sleevenotes by Okkyung Lee.
FINE, MILO: Ananke CD (EMANEM 5003CD) 19.00 "Never mind the piano, the pianist is Fine! Milo Fine describes the particular piano as 'more remains than intact', yet he still manages to get the right music out of 'that wonderful beast'. The earlier date is unaccompanied piano improvised mainly at the keyboard. On the other longer concert, recorded towards the likely demise of the 'beast', Fine spends most of his time working on the innards resulting in a very wide range of sound. He also uses some electronics, and is joined by alto saxophonist Jaron Childs and percussionist Davu Saru in a trio set that ranges from the minimal to full-on blowing. This should appeal to those who love pianos both in and out of tune. 79 minutes." 3-panel digipack. EREMITE
MURRAY, SUNNY: Big Chief LP (MTE 051LP) 26.00 First LP reissues on Eremite and true state-of-the-art reproductions -- beautiful heavy sleeves, attentive re-mastering, 180 gram RTI pressings. This Sunny Marry LP was released on the French EMI/Path? label in 1969 and rarely seen by humans since. "Examples on record of Sunny Murray's enduring originality & influence as a drummer are many (refer to eremite 14, 45 & 46, among others), but very few recordings demonstrate his strikingly unusual voice as a band leader & composer. None do so more spectacularly than his 1969 album Big Chief. Unfortunately, it's been a sick collector's item since long before ebay. So it is with great pride & satisfaction that Eremite returns to our friends in the human clan this long unavailable masterpiece. The group assembled for this Parisian studio date includes musicians from France, South Africa, Jamaica, & the USA, and the huge sweeping sound they conjure while absolutely nailing Murray's highly irregular compositional structures is as thrilling as free jazz gets. Hart Le Roy Bibbs appears once only in a wildly memorable turn. Everywhere & thru-out, Murray uses the instrumentation's orchestral range to explore his fascination with the far extremes of the frequency range. Prepare your hearing for searing high-end burn! The record resolves beautifully in a performance of 'This Nearly Was Mine' that manages to be both otherworldly & poignant. Not only is Big Chief one of Murray's great achievements, it's one of the truly special recordings in free jazz history. Seriously. There is no greater love. The music was fastidiously remastered from the best available sources by Mike King (Reel Recordings), pressed on premium HQ-180 gram vinyl by RTI, & presented in a heavyweight Stoughton replica sleeve in an edition of 600."
SOLIDARITY UNIT, INC.: Red, Black & Green LP (MTE 052LP) 26.00 "Originally produced & issued by Charles 'Bobo' Shaw himself, Red, Black & Green, by the band Solidarity Unit, Inc. documents what happened at The Bag Room in St. Louis, MO, the day Jimi Hendrix died. Captured in a gloriously blunt & low-res recording that is as stark as the B&W cover art, Shaw & the ten piece group produce a raw, teeming, clattering sound that never relinquishes. Lake & Bowie were by this time already powerful soloists, & both declaim fervently & damn near relentlessly over Shaw's swaggering themes. Dead at age 34 & recorded just four times, guitarist Richard Martin's performance is a true revelation; as Martin leaps from blues idioms to screaming attacks to pure howling feedback, one wonders if even Sonny Sharrock reached these places with the instrument. Furious kit & hand drumming, violently rattling little instruments, jabbing percussive Rhodes, thundering bass guitar -- these guys don't hold back! Easy to say 'lost underground free jazz classic,' but that's the real story here. The music was remastered from the best available sources by Mike King (Reel Recordings), pressed on premium HQ-180 gram vinyl by RTI, & presented in a heavyweight Stoughton replica sleeve in an edition of 600." ESSAY RECORDINGS (GERMANY)
AMSTERDAM KLEZMER BAND: Zaraza CD (AY 019CD) 17.00 This is the second release on Essay Recordings by the Amsterdam Klezmer Band, an energetic and poetic stage act that has charmed international audiences with their refreshing approach to klezmer and Balkan music that transcends the traditional, resulting in a very lively mix of Eastern-European sound. The Amsterdam Klezmer bug is spreading, hence the title of Amsterdam Klezmer Band's latest release Zaraza. In Slavic languages, zaraza means "infectious" or "contagious," in Polish, it is the word for "epidemic." Zaraza is indeed an infectious album from an extremely virulent and passionate band. The album contains 15 brand new tracks -- all original compositions rooted in the klezmer tradition and infused with Romanian, Turkish, Serbian, Russian and Macedonian sounds -- showcased in their purest form, with virtuoso and provocative performances by Jasper de Beer (double bass, guitar banjo, backing vocals), Job Chajes (alto saxophone, vocals), Alec Kopyt (vocals, percussion), Gijs Levelt (trumpet), Joop van der Linden (trombone, percussion), Janfie van Strien (clarinet, backing vocals), and Theo van Tol (accordion). Since its foundation in 1996, the band has evolved rapidly, becoming world-famous on countless festival tours for bringing the Amsterdam streets and pubs to the world at large. Nowadays, only part of the Amsterdam Klezmer Band repertory consists of traditionals of Balkan or klezmer origin. Most of the AKB repertory has been created by the band members themselves, who all without exception contribute musically to an ever-growing melting-pot of infectious Balkan/Gypsy/klezmer cross-over grooves. Passionate performances, spectacular live shows and a good dose of street credibility form the ingredients of their crazy cocktail. EXCALIBUR (NETHERLANDS)
MILKWOOD TAPESTRY: Milkwood Tapestry LP (GF 179LP) 14.00 Dutch vinyl reissue of the CD released on Gear Fab. "The great 1969 album from this New York duo. A journey into searing acid guitar with touches of soft folky ballads, lots of heavy organ, and music that ranges in style from The Incredible String Band to Sgt. Peppers to Arthur Lee's Love to Fairport Convention! Includes 7 never before heard bonus tracks from the original sessions!" FLIPPED OUT RECORDS
BURNT HILLS: Tonite We Ride CD (FOR 019CD) 9.00 "Dig the raging thunderstorm of sound as four squealing, reeling and paint peeling guitars thrash riffs, tones and cosmic bursts, a massive bass throbs and centers, propulsive dive bomb drums explode constantly and the sweet glaze of an insistent chiming xylophone rings out from the eye of the storm. One track, one hour and twenty seven seconds long. Cover art by Bill Nace." FRONT ROOM (GERMANY)
STEINBERG, DANIEL: Keep On Movin 12" (FRM 025EP) 12.00 "As the lead Front Room representatives, Daniel Steinberg has been one of the main flavours on the label with this being his third release in 2008. His releases are frequently played by the likes of Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, Claude VonStroke and Richie Hawtin to name a few and his talents continue to blossom with every stroke. As well as having great success on Front Room Recordings Daniel also regularly airs is talents on labels such as Style Rockets, Leftroom and Grandpetrol. With the sounds of tracks like 'Cobra Limbos,' 'Uptown' and 'Pay for Me' still resonating around the dance floors of the world, Daniel now steps forward with three killer tracks showcasing his own unique take on house with a twist." GEAR FAB
SHADRACK CHAMELEON: Shadrack Chameleon LP (GF 202LP) 12.00 Vinyl version. "The Humbolt, Iowa's classic 1972 self-titled LP. This music is a cross between Traffic and Donovan!"
MAGIC: Enclosed LP (GF 204LP) 12.00 "The Michigan band which released their classic Enclosed LP in 1969. The full reissue from the master tapes. Psychedelic guitars abound on this project!"
BACHS, THE: Out Of The Bachs CD (GF 211CD) 13.00 2004 release. "Yes, that great Chicago garage band that released this ultra-rare LP back in 1968! Pictures from the band plus an unreleased live track from 1967." HIGHGRADE (GERMANY)
VA: Various Artists Vol. VI 12" (HIGH 058EP) 12.00 Highgrade dedicates a various artists 12" to the newbies, alongside old hands Tom Clark and Daniel Dreier. Marcus Sur's "Gold" heralds the EP hypnotically, simultaneously delivering the proof of how perfect his tracks fit into the Highgrade label-sound. Simon Beeston drags us into dark echo chambers with "Idle Housewives," with weird sounds and a unique groove. Label-boss Clark and Dreier present a massive groove, which keeps three feet on the floor while having two heads up in the clouds. HONEST JON'S RECORDS (UK)
STATON, CANDI: His Hands LP (HJR 023LP) 17.00 LP version, repressed. Honest Jon's re-releases this modern soul classic (originally issued in 2006) by legendary U.S. soul/gospel singer Candi Staton. After years of gospel releases (including two gospel album Grammy nominations), His Hands marked Candi Staton's return to secular music with an album that collects four of her own compositions alongside songs originally written by Charlie Rich and Merle Haggard, as well as the heart-wrenching stand-out title track by Will Oldham (Bonnie "Prince" Billy). His Hands sees Staton returning home to the tear-soaked and aching Southern soul that first guided her career, with consummate backing support by Muscle Shoals legend Barry Beckett on the Hammond B3 organ, various members of Lambchop, as well as Candi's son Marcus Williams on drums and daughter Cassandra Hightower on back-up vocals. HUX (UK)
INCREDIBLE STRING BAND: Tricks Of The Senses 2CD (HUX 100CD) 27.00 Sub-titled: Rare and Unreleased Recordings, 1966-1972. "One of the most engaging groups to emerge from the esoteric 1960s was the Incredible String Band. Basically the duo of Mike Heron and Robin Williamson, its sound was comprised of haunting Celtic folk melodies augmented by a variety of Middle Eastern and Asian instruments. Tricks Of The Senses is a double CD compilation of unreleased or rare Incredible String Band material from the Witchseason and Island Records archives, and represents a fascinating alternative history of the band. ISB's Robin Williamson and Mike Heron were fully involved in this project from the start, and were both impressed by the quality of the material that was unearthed. The opening track here, Leadbelly's 'Relax Your Mind,' is taken from the band's own 1966 rehearsal tape, and is the source of the earliest surviving two-man ISB material. 'Lover Man' (with Danny Thompson on string bass) is an unreleased song from the band's second album, 5,000 Spirits. 'All Too Much For Me' & 'The Iron Stone' are outtakes from the band's Wee Tam LP. The remainder of disc 1 features previously unreleased recordings from a 1968 US radio session. The second CD starts with 'Penwern,' an instrumental which was not used for the 1969 Be Glad film soundtrack for which it was originally recorded. 'El Ratto' & 'Long Long Road' are both previously unreleased recordings from the ISB's 1970 song & dance extravaganza, U, which was performed at London's Roundhouse Theatre. 'All Writ Down' is an alternative stereo version, featuring an additional verse. 'Queen Juanita' is a rare outtake from the band's I Looked Up album issued only on a long-deleted 1976 compilation. 'Poetry Play # 1' is a previously unreleased 1971 recording. The final two tracks are outtakes from the Earthspan sessions, recorded in 1972. The accompanying 28 page booklet features exhaustive liner notes, including a detailed story about the background to this project. Also featured are several rare photographs and full lyrics to many of the songs." KAILASH (UK)
LAMPRECHT, DIRK: Bazar EP 12" (KAILASH 016EP) 12.00 "Born near the French border and growing up in the 90s, Dirk Lamprecht (aka DML) developed a strange -- but even more so -- strong interest in hardcore-techno. But this style quickly became too limited for him and he adopted the sound of Detroit: Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin and Robert Hood became the most influential artists for him. Over the years he became affiliated with an even greater spectrum of musical influences, ranging from all sorts of electronic music to jazz and even world music. For his debut on Kailash, Dirk delivers 3 tracks with his own touch. The track 'Bazar' is a track with house and techno influences, a perfect Johnny D's beat style and trippy oriental melody. This track rocks the dancefloor 100% sure! Side A2 is a perfect track where he shows his influences such as Carl Craig. Totally Detroit style! Side B1 'Kerala' is more deep with a hypnotic sitar and melody from space with nice percussion. On Side B2 Sian's (Poker Flat/ Karma Rouge) remix closes this EP with a remix techno perfectly executed, bombardment of percussion, intense!" KARAOKE KALK (GERMANY)
DAKOTA SUITE: The End Of Trying CD (KK 046CD) 15.50 This is the first release for Liverpool's Dakota Suite on the Karaoke Kalk label. Chris Hooson is the main singer/songwriter for the trio and it is an extremely personal guitar project that deals with tragedies in Chris' life and the constant ups and downs in the success of his favorite team, FC Everton. One thing's for certain, we're not talking about happy music here. The track titles on the albums Alone With Everybody (1996), The Way I'm Sick (2002) or Waiting For The Dawn To Crawl Through And Take Away Your Life (2007) on Glitterhouse Records already point out some of this sensitive man's feelings. Deeply sad melodies and melancholy pain are also the main emotions on The End Of Trying, but we're not talking about sadness in the form of self-pity. Hooson focuses on understated sounds like flowing piano chords and a flexible cello arrangement, while fellow members David Buxton and Colin Dunkley take turns on the piano. American cellist David Darling wonderfully accentuates Hooson's harmonic sadness with his stylish string instrument. Darling has made soundtracks for Wim Wenders and also was nominated for a Grammy Award for his album Cello Blue. Together, Dakota Suite and Darling form a striking ensemble which by no means only have depressing moments -- their music is very soothing, too. The recordings were made in various houses in Leeds and at Darling's home in Goshen, Connecticut. Chris realized a life long dream recording the album with his all-time favorite cellist. He doesn't usually find life so great. He only gets the strength to survive from collaborations like this, a healthy portion of cynicism which he otherwise channels into his lyrics, and above all, through his peaceful and sentimental sound experiences. KINDISCH (GERMANY)
KENO, DAVID: Discoteca 12" (KD 021EP) 12.00 "David Keno is not as 'wet behind the ears' as one might think. Having released well over 30 tunes while perfecting his sound with a slew of well-received releases on Offenbach-based i220 and many other labels before, he has now started his own successful Keno Records. This EP oozes Keno's distinct style, which is comprised of burly beats built from scratch and simple effective rhythms intended not to intimidate but alleviate. This is never more evident than on the EP's title track, 'Discoteca,' which uses a heavily filtered Latino male vocal. One that slides in and out of the only spaces in the frequency field that are not filled with chunky beats and guitar samples sliced within an inch of their lives -- albeit well disguised, after being run through a myriad of distortions and filters. 'Karacho' follows suit with those signature beats, but this time Keno asks the guitar player to take five while the trumpet player gets some. Flagrantly utilizing several horn sections all molded together and tweaked with a pinch of flange on top to keep the groove tenderly skipping along. The previous side of this 12" enthralls with two exciting A- sides that set up a mild juxtaposition to the quirky, yet deep and euphoric elements of 'Grutane.' Clean organ melodies are sewn together with contorted shakers tripled with some subtle effects to make this a perfect builder of a track. This is exactly the tune to ease the crowd back and rub their shoulders. If there is the slightest bit of tension, then 'Grutane' is precisely the right tool to rub it out like a good Thai massage. Discoteca is a splendid trio of tunes that the Kindisch crew is extremely excited about, and equally as excited to welcome David Keno into the family. 2008 has quite possibly been the labels best year in its short history and this release carries the high standard Kindisch has reached into 2009." KMS
SAUNDERSON, KEVIN: History Elevate 5 12" (KMSHIST 005EP) 13.00 A1: Kevin Saunderson - "The Human Bond (Claude Vonstroke Rave Recognize Rave Mix)" "It was great to be asked to do this. Originally, I wanted to do something really quirky and funky with the strange vocal in 'Human Bond,' one of my favorite old tracks. I tried a few times but I couldn't really get a vibe going in the funk realm. So I listened to the original over and over again and then the light bulb turned on. I realized that the original was a monster rave track, like what you would hear in a warehouse in Detroit in the 90s. So I threw out my original idea and went crazy with a huge techno builder, something to hype a big rave just like the original. Maybe this doesn't sound exactly like what i usually do but that was the fun of making it." --Claude Vonstroke. AA: Kevin Saunderson - "Bounce Your Body To The Box (Mike Shannon's Flashback Mix)" "Bounce your body to the box was one of the first KMS records that I owned and it was all about the Mike 'Hitman' Wilson mix and Force Field on the B side. The production on the original was huge. The 909 groove just pounded everything? when that came out there was nothing that came close to it. So it was an honor and a challenge to mix it myself... I had a lot of fun with this one but it definitely has a signature that steps away from the original. So I had to take a run at it one more time to pay a proper homage to the original with the Flashback mix" --Mike Shannon MEANWHILE (UK)
MOHLAO: Ambrose 12" (MEAN 015EP) 11.00 Another artist debut from the increasingly influential Meanwhile label. Friesland-based producer Mohlao starts his Ambrose 12" with a super-deep slab of ambient techno. The title track builds from almost nothing into a totally organic and utterly mesmerizing slow-burner, dark as hell! "Individual" offers up a more upbeat yet equally brooding track, dropping an old-skool 808 break partnered with searing synth lines arcing over dark melodies. With a total Detroit-electro flavor, this is another great release from Meanwhile. MISSISSIPPI RECORDS
SPIRITUAL SINGERS: Ntsamina LP (MR 032LP) 13.00 "Congolese gospel group from the early '70's. Loose-knit, almost 'Shaggs-like' rhythms. Accompanied by male and female vocals. From slow dirges reminiscent of Beatles pop melodies to fast African rockers inspired by American '50s R&B. A truly unique record. Full-color beautiful cover in the stylish tip-on sleeve." MOBIL? (GERMANY)
SLOWBLOW: Slowblow CD (MOB 004CD) 15.50 2004 release, repressed. The Icelandic duet, Slowblow (Orri J?nsson and Dagur K?ri Petursson), has been active for over a decade. They have made their mark on the Icelandic underground scene with a certain kind of friendly dust-music. They exhibit a uniquely Icelandic aesthetic of home-made, lo-fi analog tinkerings, which both musically and lyrically blend together the everyday and the fantastic. On the album, Slowblow match the gentle hum of ancient amplifiers and the tinkling hammers of an old upright piano with the soft squeaking of pump organ pedals or the sound of mechanical sewing machines; for them these are not unwanted artifacts, but the very essence of their sound. CARDEW, CORNELIUS: Treatise (Prague Version, 1967) 2CD (MODE 205CD) 25.00 Featured work: "Treatise (Live Recording, Prague 1967)." Performed by: QUaX Ensemble (Petr Kotik, Director). "This performance of Cardew's monumental 193-page graphic score 'Treatise' was recorded live in Prague in 1967 by the Czech QUaX Ensemble, directed by composer/flutist/conductor Petr Kotik. This historical recording offers a unique perspective to hear 'Treatise' as interpreted by Cardew's contemporaries. Kotik met Cardew in Warsaw in 1962, and they began exchanging scores by mail, including 'Treatise,' which was a work in progress. Upon meeting again in London (1966), Cardew provided Kotik with additional portions of the score and insights. Fresh from this encounter, Kotik started the QUaX Ensemble upon his return to Prague in 1966. The first thing QUaX did was to rehearse 'Treatise,' working through the pages Kotik had: 'The piece was very important for getting all of us together, musically speaking, besides having a lot of fun working out individual pages by having all the musicians contribute ideas and suggestions. We worked regularly over a long period of time, ending up with a 2-hour version of the piece -- only performed once, at the concert on October 15, 1967 in Prague.' It is presented here. Cardew said: ''Treatise' is a continuous weaving and combining of a host of graphic elements (of which only a few are recognizably related to musical symbols) into a long visual composition, the meaning of which in terms of sound is not specified in any way. Any number of musicians using any media are free to participate in a 'reading' of this score, and each is free to interpret it in his own way.' Liner notes by Petr Kotik and Cardew's friend and colleague John Tilbury. Tilbury says of this performance: 'There is much to admire in this 1967 version of 'Treatise' by the QUaX Ensemble from Prague: the feeling of spontaneity, its uninhibitedness, the rough-hewn sounds, the accidental, the half-intended, the blurred.' High resolution 96khz, 24-bit remastering from the original analog tape." MOOD MUSIC (GERMANY)
BOOGIE DRAMA: The Conspiracy 12" (MOOD 067EP) 13.00 "We welcome our dear friends from Milano, Boogie Drama (aka Lele Sachi and Sandiego), once again for a dancefloor destructor on Moodmusic. The duo has recently delivered hot 12-inches for 2020 Vision and Systematic and kept their profile well in demand for the past 2 years. Lele, known from his residency at the Magazzini Generali in Milano, is a proven veteran in the Italian house scene and his partner Sandiego is an absolute wizard in the studio, bringing their refined sound to a dancefloor near you. 'The Conspiracy Pt. 1' builds on arpeggiated synthlines and a Moroder-like bassline dropped on top of driving beats and a super duped arrangement aimed for the floor but keeping it intelligent enough to be played for more discerning crowds. 'Pt. 2 'takes a more housey approach, taking a note from the Hamburg school of modern deep house with stabby keys, a big chunky bassline and some neat effects. A sure-fire floor filler. Sasse delivers one of his rare remixes for his own imprint, stretching the arrangement into 12 minutes of bliss, mixing in a proto-house feel with a balearic techno touch to it. Think Detroit in 1992 but produced with modern means and add one of the meanest basslines this side of the pond to the picture. Well in-demand already by Ewan Pearson, Dirt Crew and Todd Terje -- this is destined to be big." PALETTE
TEJADA, JOHN: Fractals 12" (PAL 054EP) 12.00 With the title track featured on the Fabric mix CD, Fractals explores the inner musical geometry of John Tejada's electronic productions in 3 varieties. "Fractals" builds driving, rhythmic layers, evolving modular blips and atmospheres which reduce to reveal the elements that lie beneath. "The Open" is a featured track on Tejada's Fabric 44 mix -- an ethereal piece that may remind some of Tejada's classic melodic moments. Continuing the nostalgic theme is "Better Days," a classic, piano chord-driven track with a Tejada twist. PHOENIX RECORDS (UK)
FIFTY FOOT HOSE: Cauldron LP (ASH 3016LP) 22.00 Repressed! Deluxe LP format only; 180 gram pressing. Cauldron was Fifty Foot Hose's first and most famous recorded work, released on Limelight Records in 1968. Founded by Cork Marcheschi, the band played continuously around the Bay area of northern California throughout the mid-'60s. Marcheschi, who had developed a taste for R&B and the avant-garde music of composers such as Edgard Var?se, started out as the band's bass player, but his interest in experimental music prompted him to develop his own musical instrument, similar in function to the hybrid developed by Simeon Cox, and which was the underpinning of the Silver Apples' sound. The band played a lot of gigs, but the experimental nature of their music tended to perplex audiences unused to such sounds. However, a four-track demo led to the band signing on the experimental Mercury subsidiary, Limelight Records, and under the eye of producer, Dan Healey (later to work extensively with the Grateful Dead), Cauldron appeared in 1969. As the album didn't fit into any particular mold, it largely went un-noticed at the time, but to the modern listener, this is an album that has stood the test of time particularly as Marcheschi used just about every electronic device known to man, including audio generators, echodette, squeaky box, siren, ring oscillator circuits and two Theremins. Given Cauldron's lack of success, the band disintegrated, although several members were to quickly resurface in the musical Hair. However, by the late '70s and early '80s, interest in the band's singular sound was rekindled, with the likes of Pere Ubu, Throbbing Gristle and Chrome all deriving inspiration from its music. An important and influential album. RCA
FRIENDSOUND: Joyride LP (LSP 4114LP) 11.00 Exact repro reissue; originally issued on RCA in 1969. This is a true classic curio in the RCD catalog, with a look signifying a shared attitude with early Jefferson Airplane -- is an experimental free-jam LP with real musique concrete zonk... Officially the group was made up of ex-members of Paul Revere & The Raiders -- Drake Levin, Phil Volk & Michael Smith -- who had formed a group called Brotherhood who released two albums for RCA. In between those two releases, the trio teamed up with a few session musicians as Friendsound, releasing Joyride. This record isn't as good as After Bathing at Baxter's -- because, frankly, nothing is. But it's got the same spirit and a lot of the same effects -- swiped a year and a half later. A tribute? Or just an annoyance to JA (who could never realistically follow up Baxter's?? If you want acid rambling about rhubarb pie, this record delivers in spades. Why it exists, or why it has been reissued -- the mystery continues. RUBBLE (UK)

HUMCRUSH: Rest At Worlds End CD (RCD 2081CD) 17.00 This is the third full-length album from Norway's Humcrush (Thomas Strønen and St?le Storløkken). Rest At Worlds End was recorded live at various European venues, although the high level of musicianship and focus on detail could easily lead you to think it would be a meticulously assembled studio recording. With this record, the duo continue adventurous explorations of abstract grooves and atmospheric moods. Thomas Strønen has studied music and composition and is a regular member of several bands, most notably Food, Maria Kannegaard Trio and Parish, the quartet led by Swedish ace pianist Bobo Stenson. As is the case for most Norwegian jazz musicians of his generation, he has played with just about everybody and has been a frequent performer on the Norwegian and European festival circuit for several years. St?le Storløkken is a founding member of Supersilent, Elephant9, and played on Terje Rypdal records, but was first noticed with freeform trio Veslefrekk with fellow Supersilent members Arve Henriksen and Jarle Vespestad. He is probably the most versatile and adventurous electric keyboard player within the Norwegian scene at the moment. Rest At Worlds End perfectly showcases each artist's individual technical virtuosic talent -- Strønen's percussion is textured, precise and surprising, while Storløkken's keyboard work is diverse and varied, using daubs of sound across a colorful sonic spectrum. Sometimes frenetic, sometimes meanderingly contemplative, Rest At Worlds End stimulates your nerve-endings and fires neurons you never even knew existed. The double limited edition gatefold LP version has 7 bonus tracks not on the CD. St?le Storløkken (keyboards), Thomas Strønen (drums, electronics).
SUSANNA: Flower Of Evil 2LP (RLP 3080LP) 26.50 Limited double vinyl version in exquisite gatefold sleeve. Flower of Evil is the second solo album from Susanna Wallumrød, mostly known from two fine albums and a number of quietly powerful concerts with Susanna and the Magical Orchestra. Susanna has already proved herself as an original songwriter, "Believer" from Susanna and the Magical Orchestra's debut album from 2004 was named by Mojo as "one of the greatest break-up songs ever." And on her first solo album, Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos (2007) all 12 songs were her own. But Susanna is also known as an extraordinary interpreter of songs, "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "Hallelujah" from Susanna and the Magical Orchestra's album Melody Mountain (2006) being two examples of her ability to renew "difficult" songs. Flower Of Evil is 12 sublime cover versions of mostly well-known songs as well as two Susanna originals, all beautifully sung by one of the most exceptional new voices of recent years, with lovely accompaniment by her trusted band members Helge Sten (Deathprod, Supersilent), P?l Hausken (In The Country) and with Bonnie "Prince" Billy guesting on two songs. Whether it's Thin Lizzy or Sandy Denny, Black Sabbath or Nico, Lou Reed or Abba, all are given the very personal Susanna treatment. Flower Of Evil was recorded in Atlantis Studio in Stockholm, a studio full of vintage, analog equipment and a wonderful engineer, Janne Hansson, who knows all there is to know about proper recording. And it is difficult to say something about this record without mentioning how good it sounds. While many are concerned about illegal downloading and the drop in CD sales, few seem troubled by the lost art of proper recording and the tyranny of compression and squeezing of music to make it sound as loud as possible on radio, mp3 players, cell phones and small PC speakers. Flower Of Evil is an old school recording of musicians playing and singing together with a bare minimum of compression being applied at the mixing and mastering stage, thus maintaining the natural dynamics of the performance.
HUMCRUSH: Rest At Worlds End 2LP (RLP 3081LP) 26.50 Double LP version. 500 copies only limited edition 2LP that is comprised of 7 bonus tracks not on the CD version. SLOW TO SPEAK
CHERRY, DON: Malkauns/Brown Rice 12" (MM.139) 13.00 Two tracks from "Brown Rice plus 2 tracks from The Holy Mountain soundtrack; compiled by Francis Englehardt & Paul Nickerson for Slow to Speak. "It's been said that Sun Ra is the cosmic champion of jazz, the man of genius from outer space sent to Earth to reinterpret the message of our celestial ancestors through his music. Well, if Sun Ra is from another galaxy, Don Cherry is from another dimension entirely, a man so hauntingly original and seemingly unrooted that he defies origin, heritage, homeland. Most noted for providing the soundtrack for both of Jodorowsky's masterpieces, Holy Mountain and El Topo, Cherry did for jazz what Ash Ra Tempel and Kraftwerk did for rock, taking a genre and superseding well beyond its previously demarcated boundaries, demolishing all set rules in seeing in this style the potential for something far more original and expressive than any of his predecessors could've imagined possible and unconcerned with the potential fallout from reactionaries far less gifted than he. Cherry's style is dirty, gritty, unembarrassed and uncompromisingly experimental. Bound only by his insatiable desire for the uncharted and unheard, Cherry stood for a perverted re-appropriation of jazz, determined to bring the sound from out of the secluded club or caf? and out into the streets, through the illegal brothels and sleezy strip-clubs of yesteryear, past the LSD fueled psychedelic romps of the 1960s, on to the meditative reflection of the New Age and finally upwards into the timeless, limitless space of unknown Universes. It is in this realm that his music has remained, lingering there for eternity as Cherry's eternal gift to mankind. Sadly, only a few have actually heard his genius, and thus the obvious necessity of highlighting some of his more remarkable work. Explore this 12", and then explore more, as the universe of Don Cherry holds far more than the untrained mind could possibly fathom." Silkscreened lettering on jacket.
DEVO: Mongoloids/S.I.B./Satisfaction 12" (TT 069EP) 13.00 "Compiled by Paul Nickerson, Francis Englehardt and Terre Thaemlitz for Slow To Speak. BLAKE, RAN: Driftwoods CD (TSQ 2097CD) 13.00 "Ran Blake is an iconoclast. Since his 1961 collaboration with Jeanne Lee on RCA, Ran Blake has released 35 albums on such labels as ESP, Soul Note, Arista and hatOLOGY. His 2006 album on Tompkins Square, All That Is Tied, received 4 stars in Downbeat and earned the top award for excellence in the 2007 Penguin Guide to Jazz. Penguin's editor Brian Morton and Wire Magazine hailed the record as a 'masterpiece.' For his new solo piano album, Driftwoods, Ran salutes his favorite singers, interpreting songs popularized by Billie Holiday, Mahalia Jackson, Hank Williams, Nat King Cole and more." TZADIK
FELDMAN/CAINE/COHEN/BARON: Secrets CD (TZ 8130) 14.50 "A spectacular debut CD by a dynamic new quartet featuring four of the most acclaimed musicians in jazz: pianist Uri Caine, violinist Mark Feldman and the legendary Masada rhythm section of Greg Cohen and Joey Baron. Performing the spiritual compositions of the Hassidic dynasties of Lubavitch, Satmar, Bobov and Modzitzer Hassidim, a rich catalog of thousands of tunes passed down for centuries by oral tradition, Secrets is a brilliant collection of soaring spiritual Jewish music performed by a swinging modern jazz quartet."
BERGMAN TRIO, BORAH: Luminescence CD (TZ 8131) 14.50 "The long awaited follow-up to Borah Bergman's critically acclaimed solo recording Meditations For Piano takes his lyrical cross hands contrapuntal technique into the dynamic context of the classic piano trio. Rich and soulful, this is Borah at his most thoughtful, supported by a fabulous rhythm section and performing music very close to his heart. Influenced by the exotic melismas of cantorial singing, the counterpoint of Bach and the harmonic beauty of Alban Berg and Bill Evans, Borah forges a new language of joy and sadness, firmly rooted in the Jewish tradition. John Zorn guests on one track."
DAKARI, ORI: Entrances CD (TZ 8132) 14.50 "Born in Kfar-Saba Israel, Ori Dakari is a spectacular young guitarist who has studied in the States and now resides in New York. Performing regularly with a tight group of musical colleagues, Ori has surrounded himself with an exciting community of exceptionally talented players, who now step out for their debut recording. Lyrical and powerful, this is a new generation of radical Jewish culture. Rooted in Israeli, Yemenite, East European, North African music and more."
SAFT, JAMIE: Black Shabbis CD (TZ 8133) 14.50 "After two stunning jazz piano trio recordings featuring the music of Dylan and Zorn, dubmeister Jamie Saft returns to his roots with a masterpiece of Jewish heavy metal. Slashing and burning his way through nine tracks of unbridled madness, this is radical Jewish culture at its best. Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath and Slayer for the frum, Black Shabbis presents uncompromising and intense sounds from one of the most versatile creative lights in the downtown scene." VOID RECORDS
HOPKINS BRADLEY: Nothing Hides Better Than Darkness LP (VOID 050LP) 15.00 "Legendary folk psych duo recorded a very rare private LP back in 1973. Originals go for big bucks. Every song is well written and played. All originals including title song. 700 pressing from master tapes on black vinyl, including lyric sheet. The original had just a blank white cover. Here we have a glossy cool color cover approved by the band. This is somewhat like a more folky Stone Harbour in its basement sound and eclectic vibes. Even has a Lennon-McCartney feel if they did acid folk loner vibes. We picked this for our 50th release because I love the music here. Highly regarded by all collectors who have heard it." Includes lyric sheet. WATER
CLUSTER: Grosses Wasser CD (WATER 235CD) 15.00 "Originally released in 1979, Grosses Wasser is Cluster's last great album. Combining the ambient space rock of early albums on some songs with a more updated, beat-driven, (dare I say space-disco?) sound on others, it at times sounds like the best of both worlds. Cluster were probably the most influential and ground-breaking group to come out of Germany in the '70s (no small feat) and every one of their records is pure trailblazing musical history." Includes a 12-page booklet. FORCED EXPOSURE MAILORDER EMAIL UPDATES
